DAILY DISH: Royal Bank Cup Update Canadian Junior Hockey News

Published: Wednesday, 16 May 2018
By: Stephen Heisler, JuniorHockey.com

The Royal Bank Cup continued Tuesday with two games. The ice conditions at Chilliwack’s Prospera Centre showed dramatic improvement but the run of extra-time games continued when the afternoon game needed a shootout before Wenatchee prevailed over Ottawa 3-2. The host Chiefs beat Wellington 2-0 further pushing the British Columbia Hockey League story of success at this event.

The two BCHL teams sit atop the standings with Chilliwack sitting just one point behind Wenatchee with a single game remaining for both teams in pool play.

Chilliwack Chiefs
League: British Columbia Hockey League
Regular Season: 26-26-3-3. Playoffs Record: 3-4
CJHL Final Ranking: Not Ranked
RBC Results: Lost to Wenatchee 2-1 in OT, Beat Ottawa 4-3 in OT, Beat Wellington 2-0 (6 Points)
Thoughts: Maybe the Chiefs ownership had a plan all along? The script could not have been written any better as the host team, with a new coach, is just a point behind Wenatchee with one game remaining. I guess having all that time off has rejuvenated Chilliwack’s group.

Wenatchee Wild
League: British Columbia Hockey League
Regular Season: 37-16-4-1, Playoffs Record: 20-5
CJHL Final Ranking: Not Ranked
RBC Results: Beat Chilliwack 2-1 in OT, Beat Steinbach 4-3, Beat Ottawa 3-2 in a shootout (7 Points)
Thoughts: The Wild get another day off today to prepare for their last pool play game on Thursday against Wellington. Bliss Littler is going to want to finish atop the standings and won’t be letting off the gas in the last game before the semi-finals. Maybe Game 4 is when we see Littler’s group finally run wild.

Steinbach Pistons
League: Manitoba Junior Hockey League
Regular Season: 48-8-2-2, Playoff Record: 20-10
CJHL Final Ranking: #3
RBC Results: Lost to Wenatchee 4-3, Lost to Wellington 3-2 in OT (1 Point)
Thoughts:  The Pistons were off yesterday and face Ottawa today.

Wellington Dukes
League: Ontario Junior Hockey League
Regular Season: 33-13-3-5, Playoff Record: 20-10
CJHL Final Ranking: Not Ranked
RBC Results: Lost to Ottawa 2-1 in OT, Lost to Steinbach 3-2 in OT, Lost to Chilliwack 2-0 (3 pts)
Thoughts: Having to close this RBC with back-to-back contests with BCHL teams will make getting to the semi-finals more of a challenge. The Dukes will be watching today’s game very closely as well.

Ottawa Jr. Senators
Regular Season: 49-9-5-2, Playoffs 15-7
CJHL Final Ranking: #7
RBC Results: Beat Wellington 2-1 in OT, Lost to Chilliwack 4-3 in OT, Lost to Wenatchee 3-2 in OT (4 Pts)
Thoughts: The Sens need a positive result today against Steinbach to solidify a position in the semi-finals.

Today’s Game and Prediction
Ottawa Jr. Senators vs Steinbach Pistons: The Pistons find themselves in an almost must-win situation today with the final game tomorrow against Chilliwack. The Sens could do themselves a favor with a regulation win. Steinbach wins.
