25 Years of Cougars Hockey in Prince George Canadian Junior Hockey News

It's been 25 years since the former Victoria Cougars relocated to Central British Columbia to play as the Prince George Cougars. It's been 25 years and their anniversary season is coming up. The team has been through a great deal of change in its time here.

We've seen future NHL stars like Tyler Bouck, Eric Brewer, Dustin Byfuglien, Zdeno Chara, Brett Connolly, Dan Hamhuis, Chris Mason and Sheldon Souray all play for the Cougars. We've seen Zdeno Chara and Dustin Byfuglien win the Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins and the Chicago Blackhawks. We've also seen former players like Dan Hamhuis and Eric Brewer become involved as part of the new Cougars ownership group.

We've seen the Cougars go through 4 different logos and 3 different jersey designs. The first set carried over from their time in Victoria before changing to their second one. Their second one is the one that lasted the longest having been used by the team from 1996-2009. Their current jersey has seen two different logos used on it with the Thundercats inspired logo being their current one.

We've seen the Cougars succeed by making it as far as the Western Conference final. We've seen them have bad years with the team only obtaining 12 wins during the 2009-2010 season. We've seen them succeed by winning the B.C. division championship during the 2016-2017 season only for them to miss the playoffs the next season by finishing 5th in the division.

I admit that I don't go to many Cougars games myself for a number of reasons. My work schedule and personal life gets in the way of attending these games. It's also hard to be a fan of a team that has difficulty being successful. I will work hard to try and be there though because this season is important. Who knows, maybe the team will have a turnaround this year? You never know.
